Reasons to study Applied Science
It offers an exciting look at science through applications rather than theory.
You will conduct in-depth practical work and your own research.
Learning methods include completing assignments, case studies and projects based on workplace situations.
You will develop independence as a learner and obtain transferable skills in preparation for a career or higher-level study.
The qualification is designed to be taken alongside A Levels as part of a study programme.
What you will study
Four mandatory units: Principles and Applications of Biology, Principles and Applications of Chemistry, Principles and Applications of Physics and Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques.
Plus one optional unit: Science Investigation Skills.
The course is delivered over two years.
What you will need
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Science, English and Maths
How you will be assessed
Practical work, projects, assignments and externally assessed examinations. This approach may appeal to those who prefer a mix of portfolio-based and exam assessment.
Priestley extra
A number of visits to increase understanding of science in the workplace. Students have visited Fiddlers Ferry Power Station, Manchester University, Chester University
and Whiston Hospital Labs.

Progression
This course will allow progression into allied medical professions such as nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, physiotherapy, as well as further study of the sciences at
degree level. Qualifications in Applied Science can provide access to work in hospitals, education, quality control, testing and environmental science laboratories.
