We have many students from across the Priestley School of Performance and Art pathways choose our course due to how Backstage Theatre & Design broadens their creative understanding in a practical way.
What you will study
On the Foundation Diploma, you’ll explore: • Stage lighting and sound • Pupperty • SFX and theatrical makeup • Projection and set design • Costume creation and styling You’ll work on multiple live performances throughout the year, gaining real-world experience in every aspect of backstage production.
What you will need
• A passion for the arts including theatre, art and design and production • Willingness to commit to rehearsals and performances outside college hours in order to complete practical projects • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
How you will be assessed
There are no formal written exams but you will be assessed in the following ways: • Practical roles in live productions and class workshops • Coursework portfolios including written reflections, video logs, verbal presentations, and photo evidence

• Trips to explore different performance genres—including Harry Potter Studios and a Media & Performing Arts trip to New York! • Enrichment activities like Stage Makeup workshops and one-to-one technical tuition • Numerous theatre trips to watch different theatre genres • Explore installation art pieces at external events • Work experience opportunities to build your CV and confidence
