Reasons to study Computer Game Development
You will have a passion for Game Design, Game Art and Game Development.
You will have a creative and practical mind.
You will want to progress into areas such as Game Design, VFX, Game Concept Art, Game Programming, Character Design, Animation and many other Creative Digital Industries.
What you will study
In Year 1 you will learn how to design and create environments, assets and characters across 3 separate projects. These typically include a Sorcerer's Room, a working Infinite Runner game, and a vertical slice of an interactive narrative-driven puzzle game. Software includes: Autdesk Maya, Adobe Substance Painter and Designer, Unreal Engine 5, and sculpting with ZBrush and/or Blender. In Year 2 you will expand on your chosen specialism and work as part of a team on building a working game.
What you will need
A keen interest in Gaming and Game Design.
A willingness to use traditional Art-based techniques.
Confidence in using programming (Blueprints) to develop your work.
Enthusiasm for new software and to develop skills both within and outside of college.
Excited by the idea of producing a variety of outcomes based on developing your own unique and original ideas.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed throughout the two years.
In Year 1 you will cover eight units. 1-7 are formative. 8 is the graded FMP.
In Year 2 you will cover five units. 9-12 are formative. 13 is the graded FMP.
Priestley extra
We arrange many visits to games degrees at universities in the North West, as well as bringing in visiting speakers from universities and industry to discuss career paths, interviews and portfolios. ‘Live’ assignments and ‘game jams’ are often set by industry professionals, such as d3t and 10:10 Games. The program is designed in conjunction with industry and higher education professionals to make our students highly skilled and job-ready.

Progression
Students typically go on to study at some of the UK’s top Game Design courses at university, with most students gaining their first choice. Strong ties have been made with Bolton, Falmouth, Salford, Futureworks, Staffordshire and UCLan universities. Specialist pathways have included Game Design, Game Art, VFX, Animation, Game Programming, Software Design, UI Design, Content Creation and Graphic Design. In the past we have worked successfully with TT Games, d3t, and Arthur Parsons at 10:10 Games.
