Reasons to study Applied Human Biology
Studying OCR Applied Human Biology is a great choice if you are interested in how the human body works and want to connect biology to real-life healthcare.
You will further your understanding of Biology by learning more about humans, from conception through to aging, in sickness and in health.
Through investigations and experiments, you will learn how to collect, analyse and interpret scientific data.
It provides useful knowledge for careers in nursing, physiotherapy, midwifery, paramedicine and biomedical science.
This course will apply Biology to real-life situations and help to develop your understanding of current medical technologies and healthcare issues.
What you will study
Year 1 - You will have one examined unit, Fundamentals of Human Biology, and two NEA (coursework) units, Genetics and Biomedical Techniques.
Year 2 - You will have one examined unit, Health and Disease, and an additional two NEA units, Nutrition and Metabolism and The Brain.
What you will need
You will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for your chosen pathway.
Minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Science (44), English and Maths.
How you will be assessed
Each year will consist of one exam, 1.15 hours, and two NEA units, which will be done in class.

Studying Human Biology offers far more than lessons in the classroom. You can gain first-hand experience of university life through subject sessions at Liverpool John Moores University and Lancaster University, and broaden your understanding of global conservation through partially funded residential expeditions. These unique trips to destinations such as Ecuador, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Uganda provide the opportunity to work on real environmental and conservation projects while experiencing different cultures and ecosystems.
Progression
OCR Applied Human Biology provides a strong foundation for progression into higher education and apprenticeships in healthcare, science, and sport. It can lead to university courses such as Nursing, Biomedical Science, Physiotherapy, Paramedic Science, Sports Science, and Public Health, as well as apprenticeships including Healthcare Support Worker, Nursing Associate, Laboratory Technician, Pharmacy Technician, and Biomedical Science. The qualification develops practical, scientific, and analytical skills that are highly valued by universities, apprenticeship providers, and employers in the health and life sciences sectors.

Study Programme
A-Level and Vocational (Level 3) students are expected to follow a full study programme of three plus one AS-Level courses/equivalents. Your study programme can, however, include a Specialism as one of your choices.
