Reasons to study Chemistry
You will be supported by a committed department of experienced specialist teachers who will help you to achieve your best and to progress onto your next steps. Chemistry is everywhere, from microscopic organisms to distant galaxies, from medical discoveries to volcanic eruptions: an A-Level in chemistry provides you with a huge variety of knowledge, skills and opportunities that will allow you to progress to a huge variety of careers. Your chemistry teachers are specialist staff who have studied at The University of Manchester, Lancaster University and The University of Oxford. Staff have a range of experiences examining and writing question papers, publishing chemistry research with The Royal Society of Chemistry and teacher training with STEM Learning to support other chemistry departments.
What you will study
Year 1 (AS-Level) In Year 1, you will develop strong foundations across a broad range of topics across the three disciplines of chemistry: Physical Chemistry - atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics and equilibria. Inorganic Chemistry - periodicity, group 2 and group 7 Organic Chemistry - alkanes, halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols and organic analysis AS-Level Chemistry can be completed as a stand-alone qualification in one year. Year 2 (A-Level) Having established strong foundations in Year 1, you will study more specialist topics in each of the three disciplines: Physical Chemistry - rate equations, further equilibria, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and acids and bases Inorganic Chemistry - period 3, transition metals, aqueous ions Organic Chemistry - optical isomerism, carbonyls, carboxylic acids and derivatives, aromatic chemistry, amines, polymers, biochemistry, organic synthesis, NMR and chromatography Across both years, you will complete a range of advanced level practicals (20+) that will allow you to develop your skills and confidence working in a lab as well as provide you with a practical endorsement certificate.
What you will need
You will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for your chosen pathway. Minimum grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or grade 66 in GCSE Combined Science Minimum grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics (grade 6+ desirable) Minimum grade 5 in GCSE English Language
How you will be assessed
Year 1 (AS) – two 1.5-hour exams (practical-based exam questions will appear in both papers) Year 2 (A-Level) – three two-hour exams (practical-based exam questions worth 15% and one paper with a practical focus) Practical skills will be assessed throughout the course and in the summer exam papers.

Study Programme

A-Level and Vocational (Level 3) students are expected to follow a full study programme of three plus one AS-Level courses/equivalents. Your study programme can, however, include a Specialism as one of your choices.
