Reasons to study Fine Art
You enjoy an experimental approach to using a wide range of media including drawing, painting, print, mixed media and digital imagery.
You are keen to explore observational drawing.
You will develop your creative understanding and can be useful in many fields of learning as well as a range of careers.
You are interested in working in the creative industries e.g advertising, architecture, industrial or product design, history of art, teaching, gallery/museum curator.
What you will study
Year 1 (AS) 100% coursework, consisting of two main projects:
Project 1 - RURAL SPACEÂ Â
(Incorporates a practical trip to Delamere forest)
The first project explores the natural/rural environment focusing on developing a skills toolkit to build on in future more independent work.
Project 2 - PERSONAL SPACEÂ
A more personal project where students determine the subject matter and tutors structure the lessons to develop students artistic practice.
Year 2 (A-Level)Â
Component 1Â (Coursework 60%) - PERSONAL INVESTIGATION
An extended personal project where students determine the subject matter and tutors structure the lessons to develop and challenge students artistic practice.
Component 2Â (Exam Unit 40%) - EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENTÂ
(Incorporates a gallery/photography visit)
Students select a starting point from the exam paper and develop a personal project as a response. Students have approx 8-9 weeks where they are supported to produce preparatory work for a 15 hour outcome/painting produced in controlled exam conditions.Â
A-Level students will exhibit their work professionally in the Priestley summer show.

How you will be assessed
Informal assessment throughout and formal assessment at the end of each unit. At the end of the course all work will be internally assessed and externally moderated.
Priestley extra
We offer a range of opportunities to enrich students' learning experience, including a practical drawing/photography trip to Delamere forest in Year 1 and a research and gallery visit in year 2. We invite speakers from universities and from industry to talk about career possibilities. The Walker Art Gallery Liverpool have also invited us to exhibit in their schools/colleges summer exhibition, a fantastic opportunity for our A-Level Fine Art students!
Progression
Students can progress directly onto Art and Design-related degree courses at university. However, universities can prefer students to take an Art Foundation course to broaden their experience prior to starting a degree. Many students also progress to non art based degree courses e.g medicine, dentistry, nursing, teaching.

Study Programme
A-Level and Vocational (Level 3) students are expected to follow a full study programme of three plus one AS-Level courses/equivalents. Your study programme can, however, include a Specialism as one of your choices.
